WORKING TITLE:  Early Childhood Classroom Mentor                  SALARY RANGE:    $26,035-$39,516

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides mentoring and consultation to childcare providers in regulated and/or unregulated childcare regarding the social, emotional, and behavioral development of infants and toddlers.  Works with childcare providers and families of children who have a Positive Support Plan, prepared by the Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist or Director.  Adheres to and assures compliance with all program standards: Part C of IDEA, Head Start Performance Standards and the Head Start Act, Virginia Licensing Standards, and other standards as identified from time to time. Assists in program implementation and reporting, as required by supervisor. Participates on the ABC Project team, the Pediatric Rehabilitation team and the Early Care and Education teams. Assures the identification of Part C eligible children. Advises and coaches caregivers and parents in keeping with the strategies on the Positive Support Plan. Assists providers in making referrals of children and their families to appropriate outside services when necessary. Provides discussion and training opportunities for providers and families to help them develop new skills that will enable them to understand and more effectively support the social-emotional development of all children, including those with behavioral issues.  Heightens community awareness of the mental health needs of young children in early care and learning settings. Assures confidentiality of children, families, and co-workers. Maintains a safe, healthy, clean and orderly work environment. Any other duties, as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work, psychology, early childhood, special education, or related field. Certification by the Infant and Toddler Connection of Virginia Early Intervention Specialist (may be completed on-line). Minimum of two years working in the mental health and/or early care and education field. A general knowledge of child development and assessment, positive behavioral strategies, infant and toddler mental health, early care and education settings, community resources, and evidence-based practices related to infant and toddler mental health.  Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships and motivate providers and parents. Must demonstrate familiarity with ethnic background of clients and be able to serve and effectively communicate with children, families, co-workers, and the public. Must be able to perform basic computer applications using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access) and Time Clock software.

 

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:  Experience working with families, childcare providers, and young children preferred. Experience providing training, consultation, and observation preferred.
